Woodlands Road Junction Improvements
Why is the roundabout being replaced?
The new signal-controlled junction will improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and provide safer crossing facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.
Why are some works taking place overnight?
Some activities, such as carriageway widening and resurfacing, need to take place overnight to minimise disruption to the high volume of traffic using Woking Road during the day. Overnight working also allows certain operations to be carried out more safely.
Will there be road closures?
Some phases of the works may require temporary road closures to allow activities to be carried out safely.
Where road closures are necessary, we will provide advance notice through roadside signage and updates on this webpage. Where properties are directly affected, we will also notify residents and businesses by letter where appropriate.
We will always aim to provide as much notice as possible, although some changes may be required at short notice due to factors such as weather, emergency utility works or unforeseen ground conditions
Highway improvement works at the Woodlands Road junction began in February 2026. The existing roundabout is being replaced with a new signal-controlled four-way junction to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and provide safer crossing facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.
Latest update August 2026
Since works started temporary footpaths have been installed, the roundabout layout has been removed and utilities have been diverted. Below is the latest programme of works.
Utility works on Woking Road
When: Monday 3 August to Friday 14 August 2026
Essential utility work will take place on Woking Road. During this period a temporary contraflow will be in place between Moorfield Road Junction and Woodland Road Roundabout on the lane towards Guildford town centre. This allows part of the road to be used as a safe working area while keeping the lane open for traffic.
Overnight carriageway widening works
When: Monday 17 August to Monday 21 September 2026
Closure from 8pm to 6am
A full overnight closure is required to widen the carriageway between the Moorfield Road traffic signals and the Jacobs Well Road junction. Temporary two-way traffic signals will be in operation overnight between 8pm and 6am and removed each morning at 6am. Access to and from Slyfield Industrial Estate will be maintained at all times.
Project details
The existing priority roundabout at Woodlands Road is being converted into a signalised junction. This improvement will:
- Better manage and coordinate traffic movements
- Work in conjunction with the nearby Moorfield Road junction
- Improve overall traffic flow
- Reduce delays along this section of Woking Road.
Every effort will be made to complete the works as planned. However, the programme may be be affected by adverse weather, unforeseen ground conditions or emergency utility works.
Coordinated works with Moorfields Junction
Works at Woodlands Road junction are being delivered at the same time as improvements at Moorfields junction so that new traffic signals can operate together. Coordinating both junctions will help prevent junctions from becoming blocked and improve traffic flow along this section of the A320. You can read more about the related works on the Moorfields junction improvements page.
About the design
These improvements are part of the wider Weyside Urban Village plans, which were shared with the public in 2020. The final designs has been carefully reviewed and approved by the Highways Authority to make sure it is safe and works well for everyone. Detailed plans are available showing how the roads and spaces will look once the work is complete. They are technical drawings showing the layout, position of key structures, and access routes.
