Woodlands Road Junction Improvements
Can I still access Woodlands Road during the Phase 3 closure?
Yes, but access will be restricted. Access will be via Slyfield Green only. Resident and emergency access will be maintained.
Why are some lane closures happening at night?
We are carrying out some of the work at night because Woking Road is very busy during the day. Closing lanes during daytime would cause major congestion and delays across Guildford.
To avoid this, work to widen the road and install new pedestrian crossings is being done overnight, after evening rush hour.
The lanes are then reopened each morning so traffic can flow normally during the day.
Are there bus diversions during the works?
We have liaised with the bus operators and the Highways Authority, who have confirmed that local bus services will be diverted for three weeks from 8 June while work is undertaken on Woodlands Road.
During this period:
- Buses will not serve Woodlands Road.
- Bus stops at Parrot Court and Old Farm Road will be temporarily out of service.
Stagecoach services 34 and 35 will divert via the A320 and Woking Road slip road in both directions and will not serve Slyfield.
Temporary bus stops will be available outside:
- 108 Woking Road
- 120 Woking Road
When is the work happening?
Works began on Wednesday 25 February 2026 and are expected to continue until early 2027. These works are subject to weather conditions and programme requirements.
The scheme is being delivered in phases to minimise disruption where possible.
Current status
Since works started initial enabling works have been completed. This includes installation of temporary footpaths and the removal of the existing roundabout layout at Woodlands Road.
Phase 2b works are still underway and include the construction of new footpaths and utility diversions. We are now preparing for the next stage of works at Woodlands Road (Phase 3).
Phase 3 works - Woodlands Road
Start: Monday 8 June 2026
End: Wednesday 12 August 2026
Works include:
- Footpath upgrades
- Installation of a new bus shelter
- Road widening works
As part of these works, from Monday 8 June to Wednesday 8 July 2026
- Access to Woodlands Road from Woodlands Roundabout will be fully closed
- A section of Woodlands Road up to the abattoir gates will also be closed
- The closure will be in place 24 hours a day
- Access to Woodlands Road will be via Slyfield Green only
- Resident and emergency access will be maintained at all times
Traffic Management
To help deliver the works safely and efficiently, the following traffic management will be in place:
- From Monday 8 June to Wednesday 8 July 2026, the Woodlands Road roundabout entrance will be closed as part of the full Phase 3 closure arrangements.
- There is a lane restriction in place between the Moorfield Road junction and the Woodlands Road junction. (Woking to Guildford).
Project details
The existing priority roundabout at Woodlands Road is being converted into a signalised junction. This improvement will:
- Better manage and coordinate traffic movements
- Work in conjunction with the nearby Moorfield Road junction
- Improve overall traffic flow
- Reduce delays along this section of Woking Road
Coordinated works with Moorfields Junction
Works at Woodlands Road junction are being delivered at the same time as improvements at Moorfields junction so that new traffic signals can operate together. Coordinating both junctions will help prevent junctions from becoming blocked and improve traffic flow along this section of the A320. You can read more about the related works on the Moorfields junction improvements page.
About the design
These improvements are part of the wider Weyside Urban Village plans, which were shared with the public in 2020. The final designs has been carefully reviewed and approved by the Highways Authority to make sure it is safe and works well for everyone. Detailed plans are available showing how the roads and spaces will look once the work is complete. They are technical drawings showing the layout, position of key structures, and access routes.
