Woking Road/Bellfields Junction
HIGHWAYS AND TRANSPORT
Bellfields Junction
Why will it take 29 weeks?
To keep the Woking Road open the work has to be done in sections. The programme also allows for necessary infrastructure works by utility companies.
As the work area is close to residential properties, night-time work is restricted, so residents are disturbed as little as possible.
How far is the nearest bus stop?
The nearest bus stop is School Close which is 200 meters to the north of the suspended bus stop. However, this stop only serves Stagecoach service 34, meaning that some other services that previously stopped at Stoke Bridges are no longer available from this location.
Following feedback from residents, we are looking into the feasibility of providing a temporary bus stop. This is subject to agreement with the Highway Authority and Stagecoach.
Are you making changes to the wall of the former Stoke Mill House?
Yes. As part of the bus stop refurbishment, a section of the wall that separates the row of houses from the main road has been removed to create a new pedestrian access. This change was recommended in the Stage 1 Road Safety Audit (RSA) carried out by Surrey County Council (the Highway Authority) in February 2021. The audit document has been added the available on the Woking Road/Bellfields Junction page. The recommendation is in paragraph A1.7.
The new opening in the wall will make it easier and safer for residents to reach the southbound bus stop directly, without having to walk back to the existing northern access.
Can I see the technical design?
Yes - the General Arrangement drawing is avaliable to download on this page. The drawing shows the overall design of the scheme such as they overall layout and the position of key structures and access routes.
Can I still use the crossing to cross the road?
The pedestrian crossing on the south side of the junction will be closed while the roadworks are happening. If you need to cross, you’ll be directed to use the crossing on the north side instead.
Project Details
Work began on Wednesday, 24 September 2025. The scheme includes the installation of a new bus lane and bus shelter, improvements to the footpath, and the addition of a new pedestrian crossing to support sustainable travel and enhance safety for pedestrians.
Duration: Approximately 29 weeks (subject to weather conditions)
Working hours: 7.30 am to 5.30 pm
Traffic management
- Woking Road will stay open throughout the works. Two-way traffic will be maintained. Drivers are asked to take extra care when passing through the junction.
- The existing bus lane near the junction will be temporarily closed.
- The Stoke Bridges bus stop will be suspended.
- Pedestrian routes will remain open, with signposted safe diversions where necessary. The crossing on the southern arm will be closed for the duration of the works.
- Full overnight closures will be necessary for resurfacing and white line painting. You will be notified in advance of any overnight road closures via local signage.
Road Safety Audit
As part of the design process, a Road Safety Audit was completed by the Highways Authority (Surrey County Council) to ensure the scheme meets current safety standards. You can download and review the audit using the link below.
Design
The design of the Bellfields Junction improvement scheme formed part of the Weyside Urban Village outline planning application, (2020) which was subject to public consultation. Some variations may have been incorporated into the final design resulting from either the Road Safety Audit and/or feedback from the Highway Authority (Surrey County Council).
This General Arrangement drawing is the final design of the Bellfields Junction improvement scheme. This has been approved by the Highway Authority, confirming that it complies with all the required safety and functionality standards. It is a technical drawing showing the layout, position of key structures, and access routes.
