Slyfield Green and Woodlands Road

HIGHWAYS AND TRANSPORT

Slyfield Green Improvements

  • Why does the works take 39 weeks?

The works are being delivered in phases to minimise disruption for residents, maintain access and ensure safety.

Each phase involves excavation, utility checks, traffic management and resurfacing, which takes time to complete properly. Working around existing homes, businesses and road users means the programme must be carefully managed.

  • Will parking be affected?

During the works: There may be short-term restrictions on accessing driveways or parking bays. Advance notice will be provided if this affects you.

After the works: The new road layout and yellow lines will reduce the number of on-street parking spaces, but new parking bays are being created to help offset this.

  • Can I see the technical drawings?

Yes - the General Arrangement drawings are available to view or download on this page.  The drawing shows the overall design of the scheme such as they overall layout and the position of key structures and access routes.

  • Why are double yellow lines being introduced?

New double yellow lines have been introduced in key areas to help maintain a suitable road width for free-flowing traffic. They form part of wider improvements, including formalised parking areas, refreshed pedestrian crossings, and a one-way system, all designed to improve the overall flow of vehicles and safety for pedestrians. Parking surveys were carried out to determine the appropriate number of spaces, and the layout was reviewed and approved by the Highway Authority following a Road Safety Audit to ensure it meets safety standards.

  • Can the double yellow lines be moved?

It is not possible to make any changes to the layout of the Slyfield Green highway improvement scheme. The works currently underway have already been approved by the Highway Authority, Surrey County Council (SCC), who carried out a detailed technical review and Road Safety Audit before granting approval. At this stage, any changes would require a full redesign, additional technical assessments and safety audits, and formal re-approval by SCC, which is not feasible while the scheme is under construction.

  • Can I have a dropped kerb so I can park on my front garden?

Permission for dropped kerbs is handled by Surrey County Council, not Guildford Borough Council. You will need to apply to Surrey County Council, who can advise on feasibility, requirements, and the formal application process.

Project Details

Slyfield Green and Woodlands Road will become the access routes to the new homes in the northern part of the site. The access will be for private vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians. Before any new homes are built we will be making improvements to the area. They are designed to accommodate increased traffic and create a safer and greener environment.

What we are doing

We are doing a phased programme of works which includes:

  • Widening footways to provide safer pedestrian routes
  • Installing and upgrading pedestrian crossings with tactile paving for better accessibility
  • Creating new parking bays and altering existing layouts
  • Introducing new double yellow lines to maintain emergency access and prevent obstructions
  • Constructing a mini roundabout and introducing a one-way system around Parrot Court to improve traffic flow and safety
  • Refreshing road markings and realigning kerbs where required
  • Adding grassed and landscaped areas to enhance the appearance of the street

Working hours: Work will take place Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm

Traffic management

  •  Temporary signs and barriers will be used to manage traffic and keep pedestrians safe.
  • There maybe some short-term parking restrictions in place.
  • As the work is being undertaken in phases the traffic management measures will change as the works move from one area to another.

Design

The design of the Slyfield Green improvement scheme formed part of the Weyside Urban Village outline planning application, (2020) which was subject to public consultation. Some variations may have been incorporated into the final design resulting from either the Road Safety Audit and/or feedback from the Highway Authority (Surrey County Council).

There are two General Arrangement drawings for Slyfield Green. These are the final designs and have been approved by the Highway Authority, confirming the scheme complies with all the required safety and functionality standards. They are technical drawings showing the layout, position of key structures, and access routes.
