Moorfield Junction Improvements
Why are these works taking place?
The works form part of the Moorfield Road junction improvement scheme, which supports the wider Weyside Urban Village regeneration. The improvements will increase capacity at the junction, improve traffic flow and make it safer and easier for people walking and cycling.
Why are some works taking place overnight?
Some activities, such as carriageway widening and resurfacing, need to take place overnight to minimise disruption to the high volume of traffic using Woking Road during the day. Overnight working also allows certain operations to be carried out more safely.
Will there be road closures?
Some phases of the works may require temporary road closures to allow activities to be carried out safely.
Where road closures are necessary, we will provide advance notice through roadside signage and updates on this webpage. Where properties are directly affected, we will also notify residents and businesses by letter where appropriate.
We will always aim to provide as much notice as possible, although some changes may be required at short notice due to factors such as weather, emergency utility works or unforeseen ground conditions
Work to improve the Moorfield Road junction has been ongoing since February 2026 as part of the wider Weyside Urban Village regeneration programme. The scheme will improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and enhance safety for all road users.
Latest update October 2026
The current phase of works requires overnight road closures on Woking Road. Below is the latest programme of works.
Planned overnight closures:
- Monday 19 October to Friday 23 October: Works on the northbound side of Woking Road to complete the pedestrian crossing upgrade.
- Monday 26 October to Tuesday 27 October: Preparatory works for the new signalised junction outside Hazel Court.
- Wednesday 28 October to Friday 30 October: Further preparatory works for the new signalised junction.
- Monday 16 November to Friday 20 November: Further preparatory works for the new signalised junction.
Overnight closures and diversions
All overnight closures will take place between 9pm and 6am, with traffic management removed each morning. Traffic diversions will be in place during the closures. Diversion route signs will be clearly displayed to direct traffic. Details of the diversion routes are available on the One.network website.
Looking ahead
Subject to the necessary approvals, installation of the new traffic signals is currently expected to take place from late November into mid-December.
We appreciate that these works have been ongoing for some time and that the continued disruption can be frustrating. This next phase brings the current programme of highway works at Moorfield and Woodlands Junctions closer to completion.
About the work programme
Works began on Wednesday 25 February 2026 and are expected to continue until early 2027. Construction is being delivered in phases to minimise disruption wherever possible. Every effort will be made to complete the works as planned. However, the programme may be be affected by adverse weather, unforeseen ground conditions or emergency utility works.
Coordinated works with Woodlands Road
The Moorfield Road junction improvements are being delivered alongside works at the Woodlands Road junction. Coordinating the two schemes will enable the new traffic signals to operate together, helping to improve traffic flow and reduce the risk of congestion along this section of the A320.
Why we are doing the works
The Moorfield Road junction is being upgraded to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and create safer, more accessible routes for people walking and cycling.
The scheme includes:
- A new northbound lane (Guildford towards Woking)
- Conversion of the existing northbound lane into a southbound lane (Woking towards Guildford)
- Two southbound approach lanes to improve access into Slyfield Industrial Estate
- A new signal-controlled pedestrian crossing
- Upgraded footways to strengthen connections to existing walking and cycling routes
About the design
These improvements are part of the wider Weyside Urban Village plans, which were shared with the public in 2020. The final designs has been carefully reviewed and approved by the Highways Authority to make sure it is safe and works well for everyone. Detailed plans are available showing how the roads and spaces will look once the work is complete. They are technical drawings showing the layout, position of key structures, and access routes.
